Theodoros Angelopoulos
27 April 1935 - 24 January 2012

The day before yesterday the haunting sounds of Eleni Karaindrou's
astoundingly
beautiful film scores filled my room for the first time
in too many years. Little did I suspect that 24 hours later, her
companion - master is too degrading a word, let alone employer -
would be killed in a stupid accident. Over here in Europe everyone's
talking about money, and most of the time it's all Greece's fault.
It's saddening that the death of Theodoros Angelopoulos doesn't
receive similar headlines. It's saddening that only now do I realise
to the fullest that I should've mentioned him way more often, and
that my intention to see much more of his work is due for
maintenance. Eternity and a Day was the film that started and
defined my festival experiences, back in 1998. Perhaps I've been to
one or two festivals before, I don't seem to be able to reconstruct
the memories. But the scene of the man and a boy by the fence in the
fog has always lingered in the back of my mind, as a turning point.
I was dozing off, the way Angelopoulos has lulled many to sleep,
only to awaken them in surreal atmosphere some will never want to
leave. Highly recommended, especially now.
